This month we sit down with Captain Rhenora Kaylen of the USS Sunfire-C How long has your ship been in commission? Are you the first CO? The Sunfire C launched in early May 2004 under the command of Captain Natasha Cruix, since that time Admiral West has also commanded the Sunfire with myself taking over in early February of this year. Tell us about yourself. How did you get involved in simming? I first got involved in simming back in April 1999 on the USS Godspeed under the command of Captain Sherbert Finn (played by Frank Kim). Since that time I’ve played in several others sims, but the Godspeed was something special. How did you get started in IDF? A mate of mine from the old USS Godspeed days Lisa emailed me and asked would I be interested in joining the Sunfire for her launch. Of course I agreed as the sim I was currently on was failing miserably and I was looking for something with some spunk. Suffice it to say I’ve never looked back! Do you have any role models, within or without IDF? If so, why? Frank Kim and Lisa Karanastasis are two people I will always admire for their absolutely amazing writing abilities. They’ve both taught me just about everything I know about simming and being in command. Do you currently simm elsewhere? Yes – an independent ship called the USS CrazyHorse, (Which is charted to join IDF) under the command of Captain Grace Tiger. It’s a great little sim, very character focused J Do you have any hobbies outside of simming? What do you do to relax? I have too many hobbies and it’s hard to fit them all in, but alas I try. Simming is by far my greatest hobby, but apart from that I enjoy riding and competing with my horse, chatting with mates online and confusing the heck out of them with my Australian words and accent. I also enjoy medieval swordfighting and take weekly lessons in everything from quarterstaff to highland broadsword and I enjoy playing the piano, flute and doing vocals. How do you balance real life with simming? Do you find it difficult to keep up-to-date on your ships while maintaining a busy home life? With a great deal of difficulty! I’m fortunate in that I have access to the internet at work so I do a lot of posting/admin work there while the boss isn’t looking or during breaks. My other sim is very slow at the moment which gives me more time to focus on the Sunfire which is great. Apart from that my real life obligations keep me more occupied than I would like sometimes. I co-ordinate horse events for a local riding club as well as being a volunteer firefighter. There’s nothing worse than being in the middle of a killer post and get called to a fire! Who’s your favorite Star Trek character? Captain Kathryn Janeway. She has a certain leadership quality rarely seen in a woman of power on TV. She’s inspired a great many women to step outside the boundaries and take charge. If you could meet this person, what would you say to them? Why in the name of all things living did you let Chakotay fall for Seven!?!? What do you feel is the most important part of a successful simm? To have a willing and enthusiastic crew. You can be the best Captain in the world, but if you don’t have a good crew, you have nothing. In conjunction with this, a good crew is like a family, they talk to each other – not just about the sim, but their lives in general, they help each other out and learn different things. It’s great to see them work together as a team, joint posting and pulling off plot twists a Captain can only dream of! What’s your favorite movie? The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Favorite book? The DS9 Avatar books – brilliant writing about a brilliant character, I couldn’t put them down! If you could chose your last meal, what would it be? My grandmother’s bacon soup. She makes it every Sunday during the winter in a great big pot with just about everything bar the kitchen sink thrown in. No two are the same and they are all delightful! If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? Certainly does J Just cos we can’t hear it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Who would win in a duel: Luke Skywalker or Khan? Luke Skywalker! Go the lightsaber! Much easier on the eye too J Do you have anything you wish to add? Yes – It’s an honour and a privilege to serve with such enthusiastic and capable simmers aboard the Sunfire and throughout IDF. You guys make being a Captain enjoyable and so much easier! Thanks!

Well, that is it for this month. As always we the Admiralty of IDF and Senior News team thank you for making this the best fleet on the web! Remember, that the quality of a simm and ultimately of this fleet is only measured by the quality of its simmers! Thank you again, and see you next month!!!
