Welcome to the
Independence Fleet Newsletter
for the month of April…

I am your host Fleet Admiral AJ Wheeler. The Fleet continues to accept new ships as we expand to record levels. This is your April edition as we begin to roll these out on a monthly basis once again. Things are happening so quick that we will be spending far more time trying to keep you all up to date. Remember as always if you have news to recommend for the newsletter simply e-mail us @ news@independencefleet.com

The Admiral’s PADD

A secret look into the life of our CnC Fleet Admiral AJ Wheeler

Welcome to the Admiral’s Padd, I am of course your host, Fleet Admiral AJ Wheeler… But please, call me AJ. This is a new section of the newsletter that we are just rolling out this month, my intention is to use this section to discuss what is going on in the fleet, the projects we are working on, our goals, our progress, and a little bit of everything else. This section will be authored by either myself or Vice Admiral Wakeland. This month, I’m sorry to report that you got stuck with me, simply because Vice Admiral Wakeland is too busy trying to sell the fleet on ebay.  Track the sale in live time at ebay.com .

Anyways, I wanted to touch on where we are today versus where we have been previously. The fleet is in an exceedingly good place right now, we have a diverse variety of sims covering a wide array of genres and timelines.  We have 27 sims spanning 5 Task Forces, with approximately 300 members fleetwide.  I’m pleased to report that, this is the largest the fleet has ever been, and based on current recruitment levels, we are trending to hit 30+ sims by the end of the year, with 400 members.  None of this would be possible without the excellent members that we have today. As we approach our 11th anniversary on July 4th of this year – I couldn’t be prouder of where we are and what we’ve accomplished… and all of that is because of YOU the members.

Last month our website had almost a quarter of a million hits, with 2500 unique visitors combing our pages… These results are directly related to the vast social media presence that our own Vice Admiral Wakeland has established. Every ship in the fleet has it’s own Facebook Page, the fleet has a presence on 20+ social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, TrekSpace, Tumblr, and many many more. Every mission post in the fleet is published to Facebook and Twitter, news items are pushed daily, recruitment ads are dispersed to keep people coming back and checking us out… As a result of our social media presence we’ve been able to leverage friendships and relationships with dozens of Star Trek and Science Fiction authors, actors and production staff.

Our fleet is truly shining as a result of this hard work, and ultimately as a result of the quality writings that are being generated here. Never before have we been in this kind of situation, where our exposure is so vast and far reaching. I encourage each of you to like us on Facebook and spread the word to all of your friends. Word of mouth advertising is truly the best form of advertisement we have!

In closing, I’d just like to take a moment to thank each and every member of our staff, and you the members for all of the hard work and dedication that you put into this fleet. Together, we have continued to foster a fun, enjoyable and drama free niche here on the net for Star Trek writers and enthusiasts around the world. I’m proud to be a part of this wonderful organization, and I hope that you are too!

Avalon

USS Avalon

Hope in the Darkness
The Breen, the Borg and Species 8472 have all returned…will the UFP survive this?
The Dominion War has been over for quite sometime now and the Federation and Starfleet have been rebuilding rapidly and expanding their influence back into the void. The newest Nebula-class starship to roll out of McKinley Station is the USS Avalon. She has undergone massive refits to aid her in her mission: to protect the Federation from the Borg at all costs. She is armed to the teeth and has the TIC formerly exclusive to the Akira-class. The USS Avalon is sitting in drydock at McKinley Station awaiting her crew to accompany her on her journey. Avalon has been assigned to deep space out past the Delta Quadrant boundaries to keep an eye out for Borg-related activities.
I am Commander Jan Arrah, Commanding Officer of the Avalon and I invite you to take a look around my ship and join, if you feel so inclined. All senior and junior officer positions are available so take a look and if you don’t find the position you desire simply email me and I will add it. The USS Avalon will be a character-driven ship with ample opportunity to develop your character. So have a look-see around, if you will. We are looking forward to hearing from and writing with you.

Archimedes

USS Archimedes

“Below the Surface” a new original USS Archimedes adventure will begin on May 1st, 2012.
“The Compound Cascade is a vast area of unexplored space perfect for any Starfleet explorer. With the unexplored comes the unknown but the USS Archimedes is up for anything that is thrown at her.
Narath is a small Class O planet that is completely covered in oceans. Deep below the surface lies a sprawling city known as Salac, home to the Narathians. For more than a millennia their society has been one that has thrived and prospered but now something has gone terribly wrong. Their oceans are dying and so are the Narathians. With very little hope, they reach out in hopes someone, somewhere will help them. However, things are not what they seem and the small water world is caught in the middle!

A distress call…
A underwater city…
A dying race…
A double cross…
All in a days work for the crew of the Archimedes!

Again – and I can’t say this enough – I want to thank you all for standing by the sim and keeping me and my family in your thoughts and prayers. It really means a lot to me and really I couldn’t ask for a better group of writers. You guys are all truly the best! With the Hearing Part II being completed, that officially ends the starbase shoreleave. The subplot as well, for the most part has ended though I do have some follow up jp’s that I want to write but they won’t be the main focus of a subplot.
Also, please welcome Robert who will be playing Kevin Quinn, the Archimedes chef. Can’t have an Intrepid class starship without a chef right :) Robert is just here part time as he is WAY busy helping our Commander in Chief run the fleet ;)
Again, thank you sooo much again for all that you do.
Questions, comments, or concerns please let me know.

Captain Noah Mitchell, PhD
Commanding Officer

Interview with Danielle Raver

Danielle Raver

  by Robert McHenry

Danielle Raver grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. When she was a girl, she and her older brother used to sit at their father’s table and create stories, competing to see who could write the most. Eventually that game evolved into fantasy fiction writing, and Brother, Betrayed was the result.
As she grew up, she continued to write. She spent her free time escaping into Miscia, her fantasy world. She says that her characters were “…a part of my life as my family and friends. I dream of scenes, and they haunt me until I can write them out.”
Danielle is a counselor and the mother of two baby boys. Besides writing, she loves drawing, reading the classics, studying foreign languages, and attempting to garden. She adores romantic paintings, classical and folk music, lasagna, and cheesecake, and she always makes a wish at 11:11. She lives in Alabama with her children and her husband, Jason.

Danielle has been writing for over 16 years. She has cooperated in author critique groups since 2009 including CreateSpace, Critters.org, and Scribophile. She has a Master’s degree in education and has worked as a creative writing teacher. She is interested in well written and original fantasy, science fiction, or out-of-the-box literary fiction. She is also interested in nonfiction related to psychology or social issues.

To start I would like to say Mrs. Raver is a very kind individual to give up some of her valuable time in order to provide me and my fellow writers with some insight into her world, and into her life. Thank you.

Q.

To begin I have to ask this first. Do you like Startrek and if so who is your favorite character and why?

A.

That is such a difficult question! I’ve always been a fan of Startrek. I’d have to say I have two favorites: Captain Kirk and Captain Picard – due to the loyalty they instill in their shipmates. I actually call my son “number one” – but it didn’t take long for my husband to figure out why.

Q.

Please tell us a little about yourself and your published works.

A.

Fantasy has been a part of my life since I was little. My brother and I would act out scenes from the Dragonlance Series, Final Fantasy games, and G.I. Joes (haha). I started writing my first novel Flight Moon, which is still a work in progress, when I was ten. When I started college I decided to write Brother, Betrayed just to prove I could finish a novel. It isn’t a true prequel as it is its own story and all but one of the characters carry over to the next book. It does, however, set up the political environment for the coming books. The human kingdom becomes divided and the warring factions face off in Flight Moon.

Q.

Some people go through a process before writing while others are more organic, which way best suits you and why?

A.

When I’m writing a scene I play it over and over in my head until I can find the right words to explain what I see. I used to write on a whim, but had to reign my ideas in a bit so the story story would actually get somewhere.

Q.

How do you deal with distractions that may potentially interfere with your writing process?

A.

Hahahaha, I have two young boys – there’s no avoiding distractions to the writing process. However, I’ve found that lately I can only write in a notebook in another room because the internet and its plethora of information is too engaging.

Q.

Have you ever done collaborative works, and if so how do you handle working with someone else’s ideas while still balancing a good working relationship?

A.

I tried it once with my brother and it was fun. I think for collaborative writing to work the two people would have to know each other pretty well in order to play off of each others’ strengths.

Q.

We all write for a variety of reasons, what reason(s) lead you to become a writer and what advice from your journey to be an author would you most like to pass on to others?

A.

I write for the experience. The characters are as real to me as real life people I meet. I live their lives, I experience their dreams. My advice to authors is to not let the process or trying to get published impede you from your vision, and your true love for the craft.

Q.

What are your recommendations concerning getting published?

A.

Every author needs to decide what his or her goal is. Do they want to become rich and famous through their works? Do they want to share their work with others – and if so on what scale? After this goal is set, aspire to reach the means that would allow them to meet it. Rich and famous? Traditional publisher. Lots of people read it? Vanity, independent, or very involved self-publishing. Just to share with friends and family? Still self publish, but don’t invest a lot of money into it.

Q.

What is the one most valuable lesson you’ve learned about writing and when in your writing career did you learn it?

A.

I’d say the most valuable lesson I learned was to be flexible when accepting the criticism of others, but still hold on to your unique voice. You can’t please everyone, and there will always be something that beta readers or editors will think you need to change. Ask yourself, would it make my writing more clear to change it, or would the change sacrifice that which makes my writing special?

Danielle Raver is the first author I have met that involved her readers in her everyday life. She is constantly talking to us all on Facebook and Twitter. You can find her Book at Amazon.
Synopsis: Three princes receive a prophecy that all three of them will become kings, and the youngest brother Syah is pinpointed as the one that will betray the others. It’s set in a kingdom surrounded by barbarians, and borders the forbidden lands of the dwarves and elves.

Thanks to Commodore Robert McHenry for his hard work on this article.

Most Valuable Player: Lt. Jericho Vin of the USS Constellation:  He’s been completely invaluable. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better person to write with! Always down to do a joint post and armed with a quick witted humor. He’s definitely in a class of his own.

She has plunged herself into several key characters across the ship, including scientist, yeoman, operations officer, engineering officer and marine, and I really could not imagine the Belle without her now. A find of pure gold!

Special Thanks

To start I want to thank Fleet Admiral AJ Wheeler for the opportunity to dish out a Newsletter the whole fleet can be proud of. Switching the format to WordPress was a stroke of genius and has granted us more power than ever before, and who doesn’t love more power?

Also I need to thank Vice Admiral Landon Wakeland for keeping us in contact with the outside world. This man pulls newsbits from ships who don’t regularly post to Facebook or other social media sites. Without these newsbits, no one would know these ships existed. He has a tough job monitoring 27+ ships and stations and making sure the news is relevant to each ship. Admiral Wakeland is also responsible for setting up the interviews you see here and in future Newsletters. If he had his way we would already have one lined up for each month through the end of the year.

Thank you to Danielle Raver who not only was a gem to work with during this interview, she also granted us a few hours of her time to chat with whoever wanted to learn more about her and her book.

Closing

This month has been an awesome month filled with recruitment, new sims joining and winning personalities everywhere. Everyone here is a writer, a reader, a lover, a fighter or at least a fan of Startrek. We come together to produce fan fiction and hone our craft in a world that is turning away from written media in favor of the quick laugh that Youtube provides. And why, because we’re crazy, diluted or otherwise self absorbed… well yes and also because each of us is passionate about that which we have created. We build and sculpt like great painters and artists of the old days as we look to the future and dream of other worlds.

Whatever you passion, keep reading, keep writing and as always happy simming.

Welcome to the
Independence Fleet Newsletter
for the month of May and June…

Remember as always if you have news to recommend for the newsletter e-mail us at news@independencefleet.com

The Admiral’s PADD

To begin, let me open by apologizing for this newsletter being so delayed. There were a number of factors involved in said delay, but we’d like to focus on the fact that we are putting one out now, and we are planning to make this a regular occurrence in the future. So we understand that you are interested in seeing a newsletter from the fleet, and that it is important to you. We’ve heard you, and we’re addressing the issue now. Hopefully this will start a more favorable trend- we’re certainly planning for it.

With that out of the way, let’s move on to Independence Fleet business, shall we:

So some fleet news, the USS Avalon, USS Patriot-B, Alamo Station, and Star Base Prime all have new Captains and are starting to take off. If you’re interested in joining any of these, just visit our main website to look them over and find a position that is right for you amongst their crew.www.IndependenceFleet.com

Beyond that, most of our ships seem to be moving, which is a good thing. Captains, if your crew’s needs are beyond your reach, please reach out to your Task Force Commanders. Should you find yourselves faced with a dilemma be it plot-based, a personal conflict or just a technical question, they are here for you. And the admiralty is here for you as a resource of experience, guidance and practical knowledge, so don’t hesitate to reach out to them. Communication is what makes for a better fleet, and we would like to encourage that between our captains and the admiralty.

Beyond all that, not much else has happened around the fleet, so this will be a short Admiral’s Padd. We’ll be covering a few months worth of awards with this newsletter, so look for your ship or your crew and be sure to congratulate all of the winners. After all, it isn’t a competition, but it is still nice to be recognized for one’s works. And we are all here for the same reason- to create, to explore and to inspire one another.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to our American friends.

Sincerely,

All of the Admiralty in Independence Fleet

Interview/Column

Plotting By Sabrina Pandora

Plotting can take a number of different twists and turns, but the perfect sort of plot is the kind that enables all of the writers aboard the ship to take part in the storyline. So let’s take a quick overview of  just how to construct a plot that will be all-inclusive, and ideally inspire your writers to all participate and add something to the story.

Now, too tightly controlled a plot will leave no room for the writers to exert the freedom of their imaginations. But on the other side of that spectrum is the plot that is so loosely and freely structured that the writers are directionless and they don’t know just where to go, what to do and what to write. So we’re aiming for that balance between- but that balance is a wide gulf, and has a lot of room for considerable interpretation.

Let’s look at an example, since that tends to work best in such cases. How about a shore leave plot?

Now if you declare a shore leave plot that is happening on a specific and well known planet- say Earth- then this will likely produce a number of posts. The reason for this is that suddenly the writers are all very confident. Yes, it is the world of the future, but it is a world they know well, and one they feel comfortable writing.  Should you set it on Qo’nos, then some of the writers will still be okay- they understand Klingons, so even if they aren’t necessarily familiar with the geography and the culture, they can still pick an angle to approach and while there may be some grunty honor-spouting NPCs mentioned, some stories will likely come about from the idea.

However, an alien planet whose name you pluck randomly out of the hat might just end up backfiring on you, because suddenly the crew have no idea what this alien planet is all about. Sure, they have the absolute freedom to create it- you gave them a blank canvas and the freedom to scrawl upon it whatever design they might wish to produce. But if there is no structure at all, you might just find yourself hearing the sound of crickets.

Should you have a mystery or a secret to uncover, some will pursue it- tends to be the way of things. But some might mention it and pay a bit of lip service to it, then they might just do a whole lot of nothing with the plot element. What? There’s a machine that reads thoughts and produces whatever you think of wanting, like the classic TOS episode ‘Shore Leave”? Some might go absolutely nuts with such an idea and run so far afield that soon the entire ship is imperiled. Some might take that to mean that they are going to write a personal odyssey of their own characters, having discussions with dead fathers they never got to say goodbye to or they are having high tea with Winston Churchill, getting life advice that is relevant to their current situation or a decision they are facing.

Or some might just think that’s a dumb idea and refuse to participate. Some might be overwhelmed by the open ended nature of the idea and pass on it by simply having no idea what to write to contribute.

As the plotter, it becomes your responsibility to approach the players and to try to motivate them. Touch base. Ask them if they have any ideas, if they want some help constructing the angle their characters might approach this idea. In many cases you may have to write the NPC roles for them to bounce their characters off- after all, this is character-based fiction. And in many cases writers are not comfortable writing detailed backgrounds, scene settings, social aspects of alien societies- what they are good at and what they showed up for was a chance to write their character and them reacting to the landscape and the characters inhabiting it.

So try to bear a few of these points in mind… as well as the fact that a story needs those three magical points- a beginning, a middle and an ending. When plotting be sure that you have some idea of what those three might be, and that you fill your writers in on it. Yes, be flexible, but also be prepared to offer them that structure so they are not just left all alone out there, wondering if they are going right or wrong, and if they are spinning their wheels.

As with any other advice, your mileage may vary…

And how about one of you write a column next month, hmm?
Admirals? Captains? Players? Anyone? Bueller?

Special Thanks

I would also to take this chance to also recognize one Admiral who has gone beyond the call of duty in the last few months, and has really gotten involved with the fleet and addressed its needs more than ever. Her contribution in experience, guidance and the generosity of her time are without equal, and we would like to take a moment to officially recognize what an asset she is to the fleet. Rear Admiral Rhenora Kaylen has always been an invaluable asset to this fleet and we are fortunate and proud to have her amongst our ranks here in Independence Fleet.

Closing

In closing, our fleet is moving along at a good pace. We have many great talented members, but one area we continue to struggle is ongoing recruitment. I want to remind everyone that the fleet is NOT the only source of recruitment. We do recruit, and we do pour a great deal of resources into trying to attract new talent, but that responsibility is not ours alone. Every member of the fleet shares that responsibility equally. Tell your friends, your family, tell everyone. Invite people in forums you are members of. The only way to continue to grow and operate smoothly is to recruit.

I am proud to be a part of this fleet, and I am thankful for each and everyone of you as we come up on this Thanksgiving Holiday. I wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and Happy Simming!

The Admiral’s PADD

We bear sad tidings on The Admiral’s PADD this month, as Independence Fleet has lost one of it’s own, who we now take a moment out to recognize and honor in their passing.
M. Shayne Patrick was an avid and remarkably prolific writer who served on the USS Victory, serving as the entirety of Sickbay- no, really, the man wrote every single NPC in Sickbay. He created a realm of color, light, wonder and harmony in the center of the saucer section that challenged, entertained and soothed every crewman who passed through it. His command of Trek lore and gaming source material was remarkable and impressive, and his enthusiasm for expressing a unique portrayal of many of the lesser-known races of the Federation was just one of the many talents that he brought to the table and shared freely with his fellow players.
His relationship with the fleet was sometimes tempestuous, he was always willing to talk over issues, discuss them as a civilized being and seek a harmonious answer. This was reflected in his characters- capable of dangerous actions, they were generally men of peace who sought to improve understanding and bring compassion to situations rather than threats and violence, and mutual enlightenment was the goal more often than not.
You can visit with the two main characters which he maintained on the Victory here, should you wish to see some of his works. After all, even his character bios are impressive works compared to so many:

http://ships.independencefleet.com/Victory.php/personnel/character/13
http://ships.independencefleet.com/Victory.php/personnel/character/14
And for the man himself, we all feel his loss. He was a great writer, a good supporter of the fleet and a friend to many here, and he will most certainly be missed. So please join us in a ‘missing man’ formation for one of our own.

M Shayne Patrick 5.1.1968 - 4.17.2013

*** The following is a piece written by a player on the USS Archimedes whose original Captain passed away one year ago this June. The pain of losing a friend and loved one never goes away, but slowly we adapt to living a life in the knowledge that we will see them again. – Admiral Wakeland In Memoriam: Christopher Faulk To those in IDF, more commonly known as Captain Noah Mitchell.
I had known Chris for several years, and even across several ships though at the time I didn’t even know this. I first met him on the USS Polaris in Obsidian Fleet, where he played a non-commissioned officer. It was clear pretty quick he wasn’t happy on the ship, and neither was I. I had transferred my character to another, while he did remain behind for a little while longer. Not long after, I created a new character for the USS Voltaire in the same fleet, and later on swapped my character around for Jeremy Ezio. We discovered that well, we had met before and we decided that our characters would likely be friends. My character had just lost his fiancée and his was a free spirit finding a honey in every port so to speak. Of course, the characters had other ideas, and they became a steady couple. After a few years, Chris became unhappy with the constant disappearance of our CO, and him having to run the ship in his absence. Eventually we decided to leave the ship and as such our characters became members of IDF, where Chris took command of the Archimedes.During our time on the Polaris he had told me he was sick, and over time he told me things were getting worse. Yet despite his sickness, he always carried on. He refused to let it get to him and he even spoke of his dreams. He was going to beat his illness and he was going back into counseling. For those who didn’t know this, Chris actually was a trained counselor but he ceased that job when a patient stabbed him. His dream was to go into youth counseling for gays, lesbians and transgenders and he spoke of this dream often.I knew Chris as a kind and patient person, who always offered an ear to listen or a virtual shoulder to cry on. When I had my first miscarriage, he was there to listen. When I had my second, despite him being ill, he listened. We spoke of meeting someday, and he told me that the bank he worked for (I believe it was ING but I’m not entirely certain) was going to send him over for something, but alas his illness got in the way and he never got to go.When I told him I was pregnant again, April last year, he was overjoyed to hear it. And in some way, I do believe that I owe my pregnancy to him. Because I was thinking of him very often, and was very concerned for him, my thoughts were off getting pregnant and I got pregnant 3 months after my last miscarriage. Ironically, my son is called Noah. I didn’t quite intend to name my son after him but my husband and I both liked the name, so in a way, Chris’s memory will always be carried on for me.June 8 2013, it’s a year since my dear friend, whom I never got to meet in person, nor got to talk to on skype for real, passed away. He will always be remembered by his online friends, wherever they are writing their stories now.Lieutenant j.g. Jeremy Ezio, formerly USS Archimedes
aka Lieutenant j.g. Naois Mercy, Chief Counselor USS Archimedes

Whenever I create a character, my first move is to imagine who they are- which is really a question of who I want to play. Now, one of the ways that I do that, quite frankly, is cruise the internet for artwork to see what strikes my fancy. So with that in mind, sometimes I will come up with something interesting, and we’ll see how it can lead to many more details about the character. In this case I decide that an Andorian girl sounds like she might be fun.  So I surf the net for a few minutes and come up with this little gem:

http://ships.independencefleet.com/SunfireD/assets/images/characters/Talla.jpg

So, not exactly a regulation uniform, but still Trek-esque- certainly post-dominion war. Gold, so security ops or engineering. Definitely Andorian, not terrifyingly pretty in the face, weird smile- looks like she is faking a smile, really. And the suit is definitely not standard. Flight suit maybe?

I decide that she is not just warm, but she has a defect and needs to wear a special uniform to regulate her temperature. Not really very much of a disad, and she will be extra resistant to cold. Andorian, so nobody will likely mind, and it gives her a reason to complain about the heat on the ship.  Hey, and she could need it more when she gets anxious or angry- so it becomes an affectation that she turns it down a little when that happens.

Oh, and she could sweat too… adds a little to her ‘tells’. When she gets nervous she sweats and turns down the suit! Okay, okay… we’re making some progress here. That being the case I’ll make her weird and neurotic so that she copes with a lot of anxiety, thus she breaks out in a sweat a lot. Somehow funny that the ice princess sweats into a puddle when she is nervous.

The camera angle is hitting her mid body, so she looks a bit tall… but I think a teeny tiny gal would be more fun. Make her the minimum height they accept you into the service with for average humanoids- 4’9”. Perfect. Okay, the hair looks a little dingy and grey- make her old? Nah, but make her middle aged, maybe in her forties. And just say that she missed the ‘pure as driven snow’ gene and thus she just got hair the color of dirty snow. And blue eyes… blue will be boring to write over and over again… hey, ‘polar blue’ eyes. That’ll work.
So my point in all of this is first that by envisioning the character, details about her image suggest themselves to me as character traits, and I start figuring out who she may be. I narrow down some choices and create character tics and traits. And I have an illustration that the whole crew can peek at anything to see what she looks like. And I can refer back to that to get ideas in the future as I develop the character.
So this is my illustrative demonstration of how a character illustration can serve to breathe a considerable amount of life into the character, both in your portrayal of them as well as in the minds of your fellow players. Yes, you can describe them and their actions, but this will set that image firmly in the minds of your fellow players- and suddenly, like a Transporter effect, you don’t have to work nearly as hard to describe it. Because the reader already knows what the effect looks like- or in this case the character.
And funny thing about a character illo? They don’t tend to change much in Trek- so if it is accurate because you built the character around the artwork, then your character illo will likely ALWAYS be accurate henceforth (save for maybe new rank, so on).
So, take this one to heart and try it out. You might just surprise yourself with the results, and your fellow players will certainly be appreciative of your effort- or at the very least envious.

Most Valuable Player: Lt. Cmdr. Aurther Winters, Chief Engineering Officer
Winters takes home the Chuck Norris’s MVP nomination yet again. The consummate producer, Winters contributes in nearly every way possible. He still helps mentor our many young players and continues to provide great opportunities for others to get involved in-story. Not only did he lead the ship in total posts again, but he also sent this month’s Genesis Post. In doing so, he created a unique mission that has already sparked the sim into greater participation. Oh yeah, he got our Best Post nomination too. A true do-it-all guy, he makes the Captain’s job easy.

Rookie of the Month: Ensign Erika Ross, Chief Diplomatic Officer
Ross joined toward the end of the month, but still managed to make a positive impact on the sim. Not only did she send several excellent posts, but she also introduced multiple plot twists and helped to get other crewmembers involved. A character with an interesting background, Ross wasted no time in getting deep into the Chuck Norris’s story. The sky’s the limit for this talented rookie.

Special Thanks

This months Special Thanks goes out to Admiral Joseph Carroll from the Inspectors Generals office. He does not have the easy job in this fleet and he must always play the bad guy. For many men this would turn them into loathing the fleet but for Joe, his love for this fleet only grows. He is usually the lone wolf amongst the Captain’s and the Admiral’s, but we truly do appreciate his hard and devoted work towards ensuring this fleets future.

The Admiral’s PADD

Welcome to another edition of the Independence Fleet Newsletter, first and foremost we (the Admiralty) would like to apologize for the delay in these newsletters. We are taking actions to try and streamline the process to make it more timely, and hope to have these issues resolved within the next month.

Independence Fleet has seen a great amount of activity in the last six months, we are growing and slowly strengthening the existing sims along the way. Recruitment efforts are continuing to help strengthen sims and continue our growth swing. We are always looking for new recruitment ideas, contest ideas, etc so if you think you have a good idea, feel free to get in touch with Admiral Wakeland.

Independence Fleet is again looking to expand our presence, part of that includes growing our existing Wiki database, and overall web recruitment presence. If you or someone you know might be interested in taking over our Wiki Development, and help expand our web presence feel free to get in touch with me!

I want to thank the Commanding Officers of Independence Fleet, the Task Force CO’s, and of course Admiral Wakeland for their devotion and hard work. Their hard work and dedication has made IDF what it is today, and often times that hard work goes unnoticed, so officially I want to thank each of them personally!

The party goes off without a hitch, despite the sour disposition of the ship’s captain. There was good spirits as the Caitian crew of the Churchill and the more sundry crew of the Challenger mingled well and without significant incident, though their captains have gotten off less amicably. Captain T’rrazha seems intent on getting Captain Maress’Kaan’s attention, despite his continued rude rebuffs.

After the night’s festivities, the hung over Maress’Kaan woke up to discovered that his vacant XO spot had been filled, and that his Chief Intelligence spot has been silently emptied. He promotes his promising newcomer Karah to the office of CIO.

Happy New Year!

Happy Presidents Day!

Happy Valentines Day!

Those are the major celebrated holidays anyway. Around the fleet from November until February things tend to slow down on many ships. Strange enough, on the Sunfire we picked up several new players and the stories there grew richer as the friendships grew stronger. Never underestimate the power a friend makes. And never expect a newsletter, they are a surprise waiting to happen. When they do, just relax and enjoy.

The Admiral’s PADD

Recruiting for any SIM is difficult at times, and I am hoping this Admiral’s PADD can better explain what it is that I do to help with recruiting and what it is that you can do both on your own and to assist me. For starters, I ask that each Captain post a ship update that includes two or three primary open positions on the SIMs Facebook page. Each game has one, assigned by me. As a player, I hope you know where to find your ships Facebook page and if you don’t please ask your Captain, they will be happy to point you in the right direction. The Captains post a ship update between the 1st and 10th of each month, and it is then relayed.

By relayed I mean that I post that ship update to media sites that we maintain a Fleet presence on, and this includes but is not limited to Twitter, Myspace, Trekspace, Plurk and about nine other sites. This is done in a timely fashion spaced out allowing each SIM some time at the top of our pages. I do this by taking the ship updates and copying them exactly, so it’s best when the ship update has a URL to the SIM as well. I am willing to take and broadcast ship updates as often as any Commanding Officer wishes, but the fleet minimum is once per month. If any Captain is interested in additional updates, they should first update their page then contact me to broadcast it.

I can only do so much for recruiting so there are two additional avenues available to any Captain that I wanted to mention as well. The first one is the Captain can utilize the players, asking them to each recruit one real life friend. This is my challenge to the players and Captains alike: find just one real life friend that you can add to your game. If you already have a real life friend in the game, then see if they can bring one person into the game, a network of friends who SIM together becomes a network of friends that outlast school years or neighborhoods.

The second option is that any player or Captain can recruit using the same media outlets that we the fleet use. If you’re interested in ways to accomplish this, please email ComChase@IndependenceFleet.com and I will be happy to help you coordinate on the multitude of sites. It’s best when you and I are in coordination for recruiting so that we don’t step on each other’s toes.

With all of that said, I see some ships that just don’t have the players it needs, and I see some Captains complaining that they can’t carry a game with just one or two players. I do not agree here, any Captain could post twice a week until they get players, something that shows activity. People don’t want to join a dead game; they prefer to join one that shows steady activity. A Captain or any player can create this environment simply by posting multiple times per week. It may seem boring at first, but you will get into the telling of the story and future players will see this dedication and activity as something they want to be a part of. It works if you work it as they say.

2012 ends and 2013 begins, let’s take off running into 2013 with the ideas of recruiting in our minds, and let’s see how much better we can do. We had an awesome year, and next year will be awe inspiring.

Happy New Year from AJ Wheeler and myself!

‘Neath The Raptor’s Wing

The Human war had ended… and the treaty had been signed, then the Neutral Zone established. Now began a cold war while the Star Empire sat and waited, biding its time, developing its technologies and dedicating itself to finding ways to overcome the determination of the humans and their burgeoning Federation… allied with the accursed Vulcans, the frozen Andorians and the swinish Tellarites. Now would secrecy be that much more critical as they refined their cloaking technology, as the Empire sought to find new ways to undermine and destroy their enemies, with any edge possible.

Serving as the chief science officer… the only science officer, in truth, on the Imperial Romulan Warbird Conquest, Lovok Charvon was awakened in the midst of his sleep cycle by a summons from the bridge. If there was one thing Commander Rikal was not known to be, it was patient. Thus he scrambled into his uniform and was present on the bridge in short order.

“It took you long enough,” growled the lady commander of the Conquest, not even deigning to turn around when he entered the bridge. “I require full scans of that derelict vessel out there, and I need to determine the probability of it being a Federation trap. I command it.”

‘I command it’ was one of the Commander’s favorite phrases, to stress importance… unfortunately she used it so often that it had become something of a joke amongst her underlings, though it was a very private joke. The meaning was never unclear… she wanted it done, and now, or she would eject you into space, disrupt you or personally snap your neck and advance your underling to do the task… all of which she had done this tour to members of the crew whom had displeased or failed her.

Thus one of the primary reasons that Lovok Charvon was now the only science officer aboard. While she demanded results, Commander Rikal was no scientist, and had no patience for explanations why things could not be done how and when she wanted them done. And thus Charvon hurried to perform his task.

“It appears to be a DY-500 earther ship, Commander… I am detecting lifesigns aboard, though faint… scanners show them to be human… oid?”

He knew without looking that there was a withering glance penetrating his skull. “Human or not, sublieutenant?”

Turning from his scanning station, he replied with as much confidence as he could muster. “Human, Commander… but with alterations, I suspect. Plus the lifesigns are so faint they are difficult to make any sort of clear determination. Perhaps more in depth scans, given time-”

“Is it dangerous?” the imperious commander cut him off. “Bombs, possibilities of engines going critical, plagues, onboard viruses or similar bioweapons, spying devices…?”

Obviously while she had little scientific acumen, Commander Rikal had a mindset that lent itself well to the devious and dangerous. Carvon contemplated his answer carefully before committing.

“I would need more in depth scans before making such a determination. Perhaps I could bring an exploratory force onboard the vessel to perform scans onsite to…”

“You are brave to volunteer, Sublieutenant Charvon. Beam over and make your scans alone, thus the only risk will be your own. Report your findings when you have them. I command it.” The smile that accompanied the words were a serpent’s smile, full of venom and malice. Lovok had gotten used to it by now… but for seven cycles now he had survived her wrath, so he would continue as he had been proceeding- slow and cautious. He had a wife and daughter back on Romulus, in Dartha.

While his bride was a sister of the Emperor Shiarkiek, that did not help him out here in the wilds of the Neutral Zone near the border of Federation space. Out here, as his cousin by marriage Ael t’Rllaillieu would have told him, he would make his own fortune, or die in the attempt.

Suited up for Extra Vehicular Activity and carrying a small generator to power systems that were lacking, Lovok stood on the transporter pad, and in a sparkling of green energies had his molecules disassembled and reassembled on the Earth vessel. He had chosen to be transported to the control room, to better ascertain the situation. “I am safely transported and beginning my research,” he reported, and received no reply… if he hadn’t checked in she would scold him for not doing so, but having checked in she affected an air of nonchalance. He hooked the generator into the ship’s systems… which were surprisingly dusty- and began powering up the ship’s computers while he ran scans off his portable science station scanner.

No known viruses or pathogens- that was a relief. The air was thin… not particularly breathable, but there, though there was no gravity, of course. As the registry came up, he kicked himself… this was not a DY 500, this was a DY 100, a much earlier model of the same design… ancient, to some degree. The Earthlings had not been using these for years… they were sublight only.

That would explain why it was out here as a cryoship… sleepers would survive the long trek from their homeworld and use no supplies. As he reviewed the records, he watched the images flicker past and realized what they meant… and then he moved to scan some of the biobays, to confirm his findings. He took the time to assemble his findings in a simple and comprehensive presentation, then called to be beamed back to the Conquest.

Decontaminated and uniformed once more, he brought his scanner to the bridge, and the awaiting scowl of Commander Rikal, only to lean in close and request a private audience. That got him a raised eyebrow, but she acceded, bringing him into her tactical planning quarter off the bridge.

“Well?” she said impatiently, hand hooked in her belt next to her disruptor. There was no doubt that she would kill him if he tried anything, but the scientist had no such intentions.

“This is the earther ship SS Tea Party… it departed what would become Federation space in the year of their calendar 1996. It has been out here, moving on inertia and occasional course corrections ever since. It currently has a crew complement of forty-seven humans… genetically augmented humans. They were exiled from their world as wars and clashes escalated, and they took to the stars to seek a new life elsewhere. Not all of them have survived- nearly half of the cryo-chambers have malfunctioned and the occupants died, and it appears micrometeor strikes ended some. But there are still forty-seven specimens onboard, Commander.”

The Romulan commander turned from her pacing and regarded him cooly. “Now tell me why I care for forty seven humans, Sublieutenant?”

Lovok smiled cautiously. “Forty-seven specimens of genetic alteration, Commander. Not humans, but superhumans… stronger than Klingons, more endurance than Andorians, smarter than… Vulcans… fast, deadly, with the ability to have potentialities hardwired into their very genetic structure. These are processes that could be reverse engineered, Commander… for the Star Empire.”

“The eyes narrowed and the Romulan commander regarded the scientist.”Can these alterations be performed on anyone?”

“I will need time to study the specimens, Commander… I can make no guarantees until then. But it is possible…”

Ten years later, and General Rikal had parleyed her find in space into a rather spectacular turn of good fortune. Using her wiles and guile and cunning, she was now the head of her own directorate within the Tal Shiar, and Lovok Charvon now labored in a rather extensive laboratory complex as he and the team assigned under him labored to unravel the mysteries and secrets of the earther Keniclius’ genetic wonders.

“The Augments were designed to be five times stronger, remarkably agile, and at least twice as intelligent as a normal human, resistant to sickness and with enhanced senses, possessing heart muscles twice as strong and lung efficiency fifty percent improved. They also had twice the average lifespan. Even their resistance to energy weapons was improved, as it took multiple shots with a phase pistol to stun one. We’ve extrapolated on a number of these possibilities as well, combining them with G’tur Daavik’s research into genetic pattern overlays to possibly be able to lay in skills and training and memories… as well as loyalties.” That last part he was most definitely unsure of, but he knew the General well after their long association… and given that she prized nothing higher than mindless obedience he knew it would be a selling point for her.

Currently she was leading dignitas from the Senate and the Tal Shiar on a tour of the labs, extolling the virtues of the project and proposing the next step- implementation.

“Why will the process not work on adult Rhiannasu, Doctor?” she asked. She knew the answer, but it was necessary to educate the politicians and the Tal Shiar.

“The genetic augmentations create an instability in the genetic code, which in adult test subjects has proven disastrous. While there is clear potential for aggression and violent behavior in those augmented as well as certain superiority complexes or other personality aberrations, resulting from their enhanced capabilities, the adults are unstable. Splicing in new overlays seems to literally unravel their DNA, causing their chromosomal patterns to deteriorate. While it was initially considered as a possibility for commandos who would ‘burn out’ during use, it has proven unworkable as a solution.”

“However, children seem to be adaptable… while embryonic is of course the best possible answer, we are seeing successes in simulations of using children, even as old as mid-puberty… their structures are still mutable, and we project that we may even gain results greater than anticipated. Of course, we have yet to go to live testing…”

“Until now. Thank you, Doctor…” General Rikal hustled the guests and dignitas along to the presentation she had prepared… this was the true focus of her exercise, and what she had been building for a number of years now. The Tal Shiar’s Subversive Directorate would be recruiting children and beginning the basic overlays to test what could be done with the new science, despite Charvan’s objections that it was not yet ready. But Rikal got what she wanted, period… and Lovok had learned a long time ago to pick and choose his battle with the ruthless Fin Rikal.

Seven years later, the program had made some strides. Embryonic reprogramming was producing interesting results, one of which was a prominent forehead ridge in the recipients that followed the arch of the traditional Romulan eyebrow. Increased intelligence varied… in some cases the children were only average, while occasionally they were producing autistic savants. The cutting edge of the research seemed there, but Rikal still wanted the overlays to occur, despite Lovok’s hesitance to do so. While General Rikal had noted his hesitation, she had brought his own granddaughter in for enrollment in the program, and used her as leverage to push him to branch out and take chances, lest she become the next test subject.

Then came the day they brought in the Vulcan child, and it all changed.

His granddaughter was the right age, and malleable mentally… she was not the intellect that her mother or forebears had been, and while Rikal had drilled her mercilessly to insure her loyalty to the Empire and to the Tal Shiar, the child could not keep up… she was clumsy and weak as well. But now Rikal had an opportunity to plant an agent on Vulcan with a perfect cover… and the only operative that fit the bill was young Scylla. He had tried to object, but he was overruled.

“This is for the good of the Empire, Doctor. Either serve your place or I will appoint someone who will,” came the answer, and Doctor Charvan knew he had no choice… but that did not mean that he did not have options. The fact that the child would be kept awake in order to sear the experience into her mind as a defense against mental intrusion would be torturous on him as well, but he would find the strength to persevere.

He performed the procedures; branching out far into his theoretical knowledge… he boosted the intelligence, forcibly forging new pathways while the child screamed. He forced himself to ignore the pleading and as he tightened sinews and forced muscles to double and rebouble upon themselves. Into those new neural pathways he jammed knowledge, of codes, of secrets and information that she might need, all while attempting to increase her hand-eye coordination and her physical agility. He deadened himself to the cries of agony and the begging of a child for someone, anyone to help her, to save her, and instead he did what he could to arm her for what lay ahead of her, even as he overlaid the personality of another child whose mind was now a blank slate onto that of his own granddaughter. He worked through the day and into the night, and even when all that the child could do was whimper, he continued his grisly work until it was done.

Six cycles later, when the Tal Shiar agents came for him and dragged him before General Rikal, he suspected that he knew why.

“You did your best work, Doctor. It is a marvel of Romulan science… but your notes on the procedure seem to be lacking a number of factors… if I did not know any better I would hazard a guess as to say that you created this one just to spite me, so that one day it might just come back around to turn on me.” General Rikal dropped the documentation on the desk.

“That would be foolish, short-sighted and against the greater welfare of the Star Empire, General. Of course I would do no such thing,” Lovok replied, knowing full well that his fate was already sealed.

“We will attempt to… convince you to share your secrets with the Empire, Doctor. But I suspect you will not yield them, and instead we shall simply end up breaking you. A pity… I have enjoyed our association and its mutual benefits,” the Tal Shiar general expressed, steepling her fingers and glaring at him smugly.

“You should not have made me operate on my own flesh and blood, and sacrifice it upon the altar of your ambition, Rikal. Someday you will know why, and I hope that she comes for you and destroys you, layer by layer, piece by piece as you forced me to destroy my own granddaughter,” he replied.

It would be many, many years, and quite unusual circumstances… but eventually, Lovok Charvan’s desire for vengeance would come to fruition, and the seeds of sedition that he planted would grow into something altogether unlike anything he could have possibly imagined… and all of it changed the course of an Empire, ‘neath the Raptor’s wing.

Alamo Station – Gamma Quadrants Guardians

Alamo Station has a new commanding officer; Captain Stuart Crawley-Windsor. With this new promotion, it brings with it a turning point for the Gamma Quadrant located base.

Alamo was gifted to the Federation by the founders as a gesture of good will and peace. This was a landmark offering that Starfleet took as an opportunity to begin its deep space explorations into the Gamma Quadrant, sending ships where no man had gone before! Now the station acts as a centre of commerce for the Gamma Quadrant and acts as the Operational Headquarters for Starfleet activities in the Gamma quadrant.

Alamo however cannot function without dedicated writers joining this growing and prospering community. We are currently revamping and rebuilding the simulation to create a small community that can make a big difference in the Gamma Quadrant. Now has never been a better time to join as the simulation is reset and ventures to new frontiers. New Beginnings – New Adventures!

USS Washington - I like the way Jerald was written, the way the character and his actions were described. I feel it really gets you into the scene and you can easily imagine it happening. I like the way the characters inner motives were revealed to show the deception going on and felt that it was handled in a clever and thoughtful way.

Funniest Post: Warrant Officer Dex Hellion, Small Craft Pilot, for “Forbidden Love” USS Chuck Norris Two inactive crew members meet an untimely demise.

Most Valuable Player: Gorshum Gru’me USS Washington has been instrumental in helping the sim IC and OOC. He has worked very hard to support new players and help their development as writers. He clearly cares a great deal about the crew even though we have not know each other long. By playing his own character and NPCs, and doing such a good job with them he has really helped forward not just the main plot, but the subplot as well.

Most Improved Player:
Talla P’Trell USS Sunfire D
Talla has stepped on board the Sunfire and taken of running with the third highest post count. She’s joint posted with a number of other players and is a valuable member of the Sunfire crew!

Rookie of the Month:

Ensign Railey Nelson, Chief Science Officer USS Chuck Norris
Joining about mid-month and mid-mission, Nelson immediately caught up with the action and immersed herself into the story. She not only superbly integrated her character into the crew, but also was an immediate contributor to the mission. She’s a a natural with the nuances of story development and introduced some of the best plot twists of the mission. In fact, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a rookie simmer catch on to things as quickly as Nelson did. She’s already performing like a veteran simmer. For her strong performance, Nelson was promoted to Lieutenant JG on November 1st.

Best Post:

WTH – by Dr Laira Jorel & Lt Talla P’Trell. USS Sunfire D
Once the ever eager to please P’Trell is revived after her encounter with the ghosts. The two share an interesting discussion during her recovery.

Most Valuable Player:

Lt. Cmdr. Aurther Winters, Chief Engineering Officer USS Chuck Norris
Winters followed up his October MVP nomination with yet another MVP performance for November. Not only did he again lead the ship with 26 total posts, but he continued to build on the sim’s momentum. His fresh and frequent plot twists helped further develop and integrate our many young, new players. Instead of taking the story down a predictable route, Winters never shies away from provocative or risky plot directions. His bold moves continually pay off as the Chuck Norris pushes through new boundaries seemingly every week. An invaluable member of the Chuck Norris crew, he was promoted to his current rank at the beginning of the month.

Most Improved Player:

Lt. JG Railey Nelson, Chief Science Officer USS Chuck Norris
Fresh off of her Rookie of the Month nomination, Nelson continued to build on her excellent start. She increased her monthly posting total from 8 to 16, and also showed considerable development in her posts. Seamlessly integrating multiple characters and settings in her posts, she shows the maturity of a veteran simmer instead of someone only in their second month. The sky’s the limit for this natural role player. She was promoted to her current rank at the beginning of the month.

Rookie of the Month:

Ensign Maghda, Chief Medical Officer USS Chuck Norris
Our new doctor joined early in the month and immediately got involved. Creating a interesting and original character with significant inner conflict, Maghda has already become a favorite of the rest of the crew. The possibilities for her character within the sim are unlimited. She’ll be a fun player to follow over the next few months.

Three months without a newsletter yet three months filled with information and promotional news. The old adage is correct, good things do come to those who wait. I appreciate your patience through this holiday season.

It takes many people to bring together tidbits of news, awards and information convert it into something that makes sense and turn it around into something worthwhile. When this group of individuals work together, great things happen. When certain pieces of the machine fail to work or mesh due to outside interference such as the holiday season then not so great things happen.

Each of you understands life outside of the simulation world, so I thank you for your understanding and patience as the holidays end perhaps the cogs can all mesh together once more. Keep writing. Keep creating and Happy holidays.

Welcome to the
Independence Fleet Newsletter
for the month of July…

Remember as always if you have news to recommend for the newsletter e-mail us at news@independencefleet.com

The Admiral’s PADD

This past month marked many occasions in the real world:
1.Breast Cancer Awareness Month
2. the anniversary of the day Matthew Shepard was murdered
3. for Americans, a few political debates that are laying the groundwork for an election that could shape the future of a country on the brink of going in two polar directions.

I have watched as this election has destroyed friendships as the many deeply personal issues become publicly argued amongst friends and family. It seems that lifelong friendships are being put to the test over issues that everyone assumed were settled a generation ago, or issues that may not be resolved for another generation. As a country, we are about to enter into an election that will set the course of a nation like few elections will so I encourage each American to take the time to vote this November and to really consider yourself and your neighbor when you do.

That said, the fleet has been blessed with NO POLITICS lately! W00t! That’s right folks we have finally found a set of Admirals who aren’t more worried about power and control than they are about helping out the fleet. You see, in this fleet, an Admiral is not the root power of every ship, unlike some fleets that have too many chiefs; we believe a Captain should command their ship and we stay out of their way and allow them to do so. Don’t get me wrong, we have a system of authority in place for extreme emergencies, but for the most part, all the Admirals do is paperwork and keep track of things so the rest of the fleet can play smoothly. Everything here is free, paid for by our Fleet Admiral, but in order for him to keep paying for everything, he needs certain records. That’s where we the Admiralty come into play, we track the data he needs to know so he can project expenses and stay on top of things. There is no glory in being an Admiral around here and it’s a thankless job for the most part. So I will take the time here to say thank you to each of the Task Force Commanding Officers who make the weekly meetings, handle the weekly reports, the monthly reports and maintain the spreadsheets for each of our over 20 SIMs. These are the true hard workers that are never seen much, because everything they do comes to me directly. Thanks for all of your hard work; I really do appreciate the help!

This is a serious month in the real world, we raise awareness of the battle against Breast Cancer, we take a stand against Bullying in all of its forms, and for American’s, we are about to have a VERY important election. While the world is serious with serious issues, I encourage you all to have some fun with your characters and your game. Take it as a chance to relax and to blow off some steam. Recently I was speaking with someone who said that their character seems to be all over the place but they thought it was because lately they themselves are all over the place. I suggested they play it out with their character; our characters are a great window into ourselves when we need them to be, they can be for more than just being heroes, they can be windows of self-discovery.

Most importantly, remember that this is a game, and every person here is a volunteer. None of us are paid, and many of the senior admirals actually shell out their own money to keep this service available. Enjoy the game, and remember to be grateful as you do so – for all of those who sacrifice their time, talents and money to keep this organization going!

USS Challenger

The away mission was aborted by an unanticipated change in the weather combined with a discovery of a Romulan escape pod with a single dead occupant. Though hampered by technical and physical difficulties, the Challenger was able to retrieve the escape pod. However, as the crew was examining their find, they released a Romulan bioweapon onto the ship, and it quickly escaped attempts at confinement. Captain Maress’Kaan, seeing that they were caught in a trap, rushed to facilitate an escape, but could not before his ship was cornered by a squadron of Romulan ships. Hopelessly outgunned and debilitated by the epidemic, the captain was forced to surrender his ship to the Romulan boarding parties. However, it was a trap of the Caitian’s own. With some misdirection, he was first able to convince the Romulan admiral that the Challenger was safe, then that he had managed to infect all of the other ships, prompting the Romulans to negotiate a withdrawal, leaving the Challenger to go on her merry way.

Now, the Challenger is returning to the nearest Starbase to refresh and refill her roster and prepare for her next mission, whatever it may be.The Challenger currently has openings for the following senior positions, as well as many openings for junior positions:

Another month gone by plus or minus depending on the Ferengi doing the math. Keep those recruits coming, keep up the good posting numbers and enjoy yourselves as we approach the bewitching hour. Holidays are upon most of us here in the states, and for you abroad as well. As we get closer beware of NaNoWriMo stealing your writers, but be lenient on them when they return.

The Admiral’s PADD

Hello again, this month we have a great deal of changes in store for you.  Several new ships, and faces, and awards… Before we get to that, I want to take a moment to talk to each of you.

It is with profound sadness that I must relay that Commander Fiona McCray, Executive Officer of the USS Victory played by Linda Russell-Walton has passed away suddenly of what is an apparent brain aneurysm. Linda was a warm and caring individual, with a passion for friends and for Star Trek.  Linda was a writer of enormous capability, with an imagination and flair for the dramatic that few could touch… these traits endeared her to everyone she met!

Our deepest and most sincere condolences are extended to Linda’s family and friends, as well as to the captain and crew of the USS Victory – Linda’s home away from home. While it is not easy to say goodbye, know that her spirit will live on with each of you!

If there is anything at all that any of us here in Independence Fleet can do, please feel free to let us know!

Interview with Joan Hazel

Joan Hazel

A short biography:

A native of Selmer, Tenn., Joan Hazel is an accomplished actress and vocalist who has performed with theater and opera companies across the eastern United States. She has spent time as a vocal and piano teacher at the University level. As a teacher she is much sought after for her skills and often works privately with students in her home. In addition to her work on stage and with performers, she is also a skilled box office manager who has served as the Athletics Ticket Manager at Troy University for five years. Her spare time is spent with the cast of characters who live in her head. She has written three novels that range from historical fiction and fantasy to reality-based crime fiction.

This biography was provided by the author or their representative.

Katharyn King: Hi Joan ! Firstly, it’s a pleasure to be able to have an interview with
you!

Joan Hazel: Thanks for asking me. I’m excited to do it.

KK: Secondly, allow me to congratulate you on your success—it’s not an easy task
to become a bestseller, but you’ve done it so kudos to you !

JH: Ha, ha. I’m not sure I classify myself as a bestseller, but I would be lying if I said I
didn’t like the moniker.

KK: I wish I could stray away from the generic questions, but as you’ve built up
quite a fanbase, I’m sure people are dying to know the basics about Joan Hazel.
Why don’t you tell me where you’re from, whether you’ve got family, etc. etc. ?

JH: I’m just a small town girl really. My childhood was spent on a cotton farm in
rural Tennessee and spent most of my time playing with the animals. When I was 14, I
moved to Corinth, Mississippi.
I married my wonderful husband 21 years ago and have a beautiful fur daughter,
Ismarelda. She is half-American Spitz, half Sheltie and quite the little diva.

KK: I’ve noticed you keep a fairly active blog—it’s great to see that you’re in touch
with your audience and sharing with them the things that matter to you—would
you agree with me that many authors lose touch with their fans as their success
increases, and do you see that happening to you in the future ? I call it the “J. K.
Rowling Effect” –or, if you’ve ever read Christie Golden’s books, she used to be
extremely fan-oriented and would read/respond to every email she possibly could
until about six years ago.

JH: I have noticed that also. If I am so blessed to get to the point of the “J.K. Rowling”,
I plan on staying in contact best I can with the fans. After all, you guys are the ones that
would help me to achieve that status, and I would never want to lose that connection.
And I want that to work both ways. I never want the fans to think that I am inaccessible.
I want to know what you think of the books and the characters. In fact, someone disliked
on of my characters so much she created a blog called “Aaron McAfee Must Die.” How
great is that?

KK: Your biographical information on your website describes you as a former
Opera singer-turned Writer. Do you ever miss singing and/or do you still perform as
a singer publicly? Why/why not?

JH: I do miss preforming every now and then. Occasionally I am asked to perform the
National Anthem and I have re-visited my love for musical theatre in the past couple of
years. But overall I am satisfied not being onstage. Opera became too judgmental for me.
I began to notice the trend of singers being cast for body type and looks over their ability
to sing. I even had a role taken away from me because I did not fit the dress the company
already had and they did not want to spend the money on another one. The role was given
to a smaller singer, whose voice was the wrong type for the role. That was probably more
than you really wanted to know wasn’t it?

KK: Interesting! Do you find that writing is more a form of therapy, or just
something for fun?

JH: Maybe a bit of both. To be able to step inside a character’s skin to see how they
would react or handle a situation is terribly fun. Then again, when you can write a
character such as Apple-y, a sadistic Siberian tiger, then you get to explore hidden parts
of your own psyche. Of course, that could be a bit scary if you stop and think about it.

KK: You don’t appear to be one of those pigeon-holed writers; that is to say, your
books span across multiple genres, which is rather unusual. Is that something
you’ve set out to achieve—eclectism ?

JH: Not really. But I believe that good writing and storytelling is good writing and
storytelling no matter what the genre.

KK: What do you believe sets you apart? Why should people read your work?

JH: I believe, or at least I hope, it is that my characters are credible. There are 4 leading
men in The Last Guardian and no two are alike. I believe my characters and stories make
people go: I know that guy or girl. Or illicit some type of emotion from the reader. If they
don’t then I have failed in my goal.

KK: Tell me about what makes you tick—what inspires you? If you could pick three
positive words about yourself and three criticisms, what would they be?

JH: Really? That has always been hard for me. Three words that are positive. Quirky—
in that I look at the world a bit differently. That helps A LOT when writing Ghost.
Spiritual—which gave me a strong base to work from when creating the world of
the shape-shifters. And lastly—outgoing. I have little fear in meeting new people or
challenges unless either involves heights, then I am out.

Three words that are criticisms? Perfectionist—which can be limiting. Obsessive—
I rewrote one chapter 12 times until it felt right. ADOP—which stands for Attention

Deficit Oooo Pretty. It is such a well-known fact about me, that a find of mine told me
I reminded them of the dog from the Pixar film UP! You know… “My master is a good
and kind—SQUIRREL!”

KK: I hope you don’t mind my asking a few personal questions !

JH: Not at all.

KK: Romance/love definitely finds its place as a central theme in your work, so let
me ask you this—is it purely fictional, are do you draw on your own experiences ?

JH: There is a bit of both involved. I am definitely a romantic at heart so have to stop and
think how I would like for my male characters to handle this. But there are parts that are
pulled from real life with an added bit of embellishment.

KK: What’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you ?

JH: The most romantic was when my husband took me to a Pirates game on our
anniversary and during every half inning a representative from the Pirates organization
would bring me a long stem rose until I had collected all two dozen. I was so mad I was
at the ballgame on my anniversary, but the roses got him out of the doghouse.

KK: If you could give any single piece of advice about relationships for the younger
crowd, what would it be?

JH: Be mindful of what you say in anger. Once it out, you can never, ever take it back,
and I promise you, your partner will never forget it.

KK: Now for the fun part—likes/dislikes! White, Milk or Dark Chocolate—or none
of the above ?

JH: If I had to choose, I would have to say Dark Chocolate, and if you pair it with a good
coffee or wine, all the better.

KK: Dems or Reps ? Obama or Romney 2012 ?

JH: Sorry. I never discuss politics.

KK: Grape or Orange soda ?

JH: Neither. I actually like Peach soda. Must be the Southern Girl in me.

KK: What type of music do you listen to?

JH: A better question would be what don’t I listen to? My music taste spans decades and
genres. About the only thing I do not listen to is hip-hop and rap.

KK: What sorts of extracurricular activities do you enjoy ? Do you have a special
talent that might surprise people ?

JH: I am a pretty simple person really. I love to cook, but have a lot of extra time to spend
in the kitchen. I’m pretty sure my hubby thinks I am trying to starve him at the present
time.

The only other talent I have that few people know about is that I can read palms.

KK: Thank you so much for participating in this interview, Joan ! I appreciate you
taking the time to do it because I understand how busy writers are—I’m a writer
myself so I know how it goes. Is there anything else you’d like to share before we
depart?

JH: Just to thank you for the opportunity, and I was serious about the fans contacting me.
I want to know what is on your minds.

You can learn more about Joan Hazel on her website http://www.joanhazel.com;
her books are available for Kindle and Nook. Thanks for reading !

Chirikov

USS Chirikov

S3E32 Unforgiven – Fourteen years ago, the Breen led a brazen attack on Earth which killed many… including the family of a starship captain. That captain has waited a long time to enact revenge. Now, a Norway class starship has gone AWOL. The USS Chirikov, the closest vessel in the area, has been tasked with tracking down the errant starship and its CO. If they’re unsuccessful, it could lead to genocide and an all-out war between the Federation Alliance and the Typhon Pact!

The USS Chirikov can use a few good people, whether it’s long-term or just for one mission. Write for a Starfleet officer, a civilian, or be a guest star. If you’re over 15, are passingly familiar with the genre, enjoy creative writing and prefer a more structured sim (perfect for noobs) come check us out: http://ships.independencefleet.com/Chirikov.php/main/join
We currently have openings for a Chief Science Officer and a Chief Engineer.

Alamo Station

USS Bonaventure

The Bonaventure continues to venture into interesting scenarios. As we clean up the mess the Klingons made, we think back on the good times and bad and push forward, as the doctor and others make merriment on the ship via a mascaraed ball. Whatever shall happen?

Alamo Station

Alamo Station

…gets a new captain as it begins a transformation. Stay tuned!USS Nova

USS Nova

Docked until this winter hopefully.

USS Sunfire

Challenger

USS Challenger

After Section 31 accosted the old captain and most of the senior staff and installed him as the new commander of the Challenger; Maress’Kaan has been scrambling to reorganize his ship, handing out a flurry of promotions to fill out his command structure. Though surrounded by inexperienced personnel, he has risked continuing the mission, not wanting to start out his career with a failure.

After a briefing to determine their course of action, Maress’Kaan commissioned Lt. Cmdr Matthew Allans to lead an away team, including the new intelligence officer, Ens. Karah, to construct the listening array on Tellus II, a Demon-class planet on the edge of the Romulan DMZ. As the away team sets foot planet side, the Challenger watches the stars, wary of any visitors that might show…

Indomitable

USS Indomitable

We were currently on the edge of the Typhon expanse at forward Logistics base 7261.
The crew was encouraged to take leave while we were docked.

Lt Commander Keith Tash was been promoted and now fills the XO slot.

We’ve received a briefing from our Chief Intel Officer.
We have three light cruisers and a fortified asteroid base.
We begin the hunt ASAP.
Ordered:
1) Launch the Recon wing and ready the Strike wing.
2) Prepare the Science Department for long range sensor sweeps.
3) Have the Marine Boarding parties start their ready action training immediately.
4) Have the Medical department prep Corpsmen and Combat Life-Savers.
5) Engineering and Operations I want us fast and stealthy.
Also prep the industrial replicators for breaching gear.

Rioja

USS rioja

“The history of our galaxy before things were as we know them…” He struggled to find a way to explain it. “The box suggests that our galaxy run’s in ‘cycles’ of 65,000 year’s and every ‘cycle’ ends with the crippling and genocide of intelligent life throughout all of the quadrant’s. The box contains a history of the last cycle… and tell’s us how it ended.” He paused and awaited the comment’s and questions that were to fired his way. — A snippet from the latest mission, things are going to get spooky. So jump in as we have many positions available including Chief engineer, Chief science officer and assistant Chief medical officer. Join us:) http://ships.independencefleet.com/Rioja.php/main/index

Liberty Belle

USS Liberty Belle

With the planet secured and their next course of action planned, the Liberty Belle now awaits reinforcements for the Cardassian world of Loval, whilst also awaiting for their mysterious Alpha Jem’Hadar patient to awake and to tell them if there truly is a new Dominion threat…

Eridani

Eridani Station

Thrilling end for the Eridani Station’s first mission: Dawnbreak. After going after a former intelligence officer that stole plans for a super weapon, the Eridani Station crew tracked him down deep into Gorn space, ready to sell it to the Typhon Pact. Not only the traitor was stopped but the crew destroyed the super weapons plans. They were losses and wounded, but it was the first round of the Silent War, which means there are more to come!

Some months are harder than others to remember why I started doing this in the first place. Almost two years ago now I was approached to join the relaunch of the USS Sunfire and recall now just how apprehensive I was and how much more so my wife was. She wanted to encourage my writing but not at the detriment of my family. So I took the job and created a quiet shuttle pilot who enjoyed going really fast by the name of Jenna Ramthorne.

Now Jenna had been through a lot, I just didn’t know it yet. As time progressed she opened up to the characters who she lived with, worked with and fell in love with. Jenna progressed through the ranks because her writer threw all that he had into her story, something I think many of us do. We lose ourselves in the story.

When we lose ourselves we sometimes lose the original focus as I have done. Jenna’s life, like my own, became a frustrating and convoluted mess, a chore and no longer fun. So now I, possibly like many of you are struggling to enjoy ourselves in the myriad of a good character driven story and all we seem to be able to do is blow things up.

This is precisely why we must take a step back, take a deep breath in and re-evaluate that which is most important. Refocus on that and the rest of the puzzle should fall into place, or fall apart. Either way it’s nothing unless you try.

The Admiral’s PADD

Fellow simmers, as I’ve mentioned in the past, growing pains were to be had. This last month we experienced some of those pains, and I am certain this will not be the last of them. From time to time there will be people who do not agree or like the way things are done. We, in the admiralty, pride ourselves on our ability to usually accommodate everyone. We spend a great deal of time trying to foster an open and accepting medium for players to enjoy, however, from time to time we will run into situations where someone feels slighted or just plain thinks they can do it better.

That is exactly what happened this month. Four members left Independence Fleet this month, because they were not capable of getting along in our group. BJ Reign and Lisa Krause of the USS Phoenix came into IDF asking for help. We accepted their sim, set them up, helped them recruit, and tried to accommodate them in anyway we could. Little did we know that BJ Reign, the XO of the Phoenix, had previously had “issues” with two other fleets and had multiple strikes against her from several Trek forums.  We soon found out when she turned her guns on our group.  When she felt slighted and did not get exactly what she thought she deserved, she libeled our group, slandered our administrative staff, and removed the Phoenix from our fleet. This was not enough for Ms. Reign, she took the simmers we recruited for her, deleted the contents of the sim from our servers, and when we responded by censuring her, she started viciously attacking us in public and private. Going so far as trying to have us shut down by our hosts.
A few days later, two of our long time members, Sakura Mahal and Tazendra Loken were charged with harassment of a simmer. Before the investigation was even complete, they had already made up their mind that they were through with Independence Fleet.  They too logged in and deleted user accounts, characters, welcome messages, images created for the Challenger.  They even went so far as to delete the user and character account of the simmer that had accused them of harassment.  Luckily, our backup policy prevented any loss of data, we restored the deleted information and moved on. In an effort to harm the fleet, these 4 individuals all teamed up and started viciously attacking us, going so far as to file Copyright Infringement claims against us, because we refused to delete their names from our wiki, and our ship rosters. To our CO’s, XO’s, and individuals that might someday take on a command role: Independence Fleet does not tolerate the deletion of information from our ships archives. Characters, Users, Posts, etc should NEVER be deleted for any reason. We keep these archives active forever, so that simmers later on down the line can always go back and see these posts and enjoy the story, even long after the ship is decommissioned.

Independence Fleet retained legal counsel, and worked with our ISP’s legal department to ensure compliance with the laws and as a result of our hard work, we were able to resolve the claims without any downtime to the fleet.   However, the situation is not yet over. BJ Reign has gone so far as to drag our former Commander in Chief through the mud in an attempt to further alienate our fleet. Jeremiah served as our Commander in Chief for 5 years before hiring me, during his tenure the fleet saw great growth, but ultimately fell into a stagnant pattern as a result of similar disputes with simmers who thought they could run a fleet better. Jeremiah led us out of the yahoogroups days of old and into our own hosted solution, that eventually evolved into Nova.  He retired 2 years ago, and outside of being the technical contact for our host, has not been involved in IDF. However, Ms. Reign, seeing that he was the technical contact for our domain, took to attacking him as well.

Folks, Independence Fleet is a place we come to have fun, to enjoy the game and to enjoy the realm that Gene Roddenberry so graciously shared with us.  Politics, drama, backstabbing and propaganda spreading is for another time and place, it will not be tolerated here in IDF. We support and promote an environment of easy going, relaxed and enjoyable roleplaying.  We, as a fleet, are here to provide a safe environment for every single person that wants to be a part of Star Trek Roleplaying. We have sims for every demographic, and we try to be the most accommodating group of people.  We do not discriminate, we do not exclude, and we do not tolerate any such action by any member of this fleet.

The four young ladies that left Independence Fleet are all phenomenal simmers, each with unique talents, and great potential. It is always disheartening for me, when I see that we were unable to work things out and come to an amicable resolution.  In each of their cases, we do sincerely wish them the best in all that they do in the future.  It is our sincerest hope that they find whatever they are looking for in whatever new groups they end up.

The most important thing to remember, for you as members, is that you have a voice in this fleet. If you do not agree with something, come to myself or to any of the other admirals and voice your concerns. If you have an idea, come to us and express it. If you feel slighted, make it known to us. As long as our conversations remain open, respectful and productive, we will all continue to make a better fleet for one another.   Our, [The Admiralty’s], doors are always open, and as long as we all keep those lines of communication open, the fleet will continue to flourish. Do not let the occasional growing pains, like we’ve seen this month discourage you.  They are normal, and somewhat expected. The fleet will persevere, just as we have for the past 11 years!

Happy Simming my friends!

We are a fresh and shiny new ship straight out of the shipyards, a ‘refit-era” Constitution-class starship. A senior staff with considerable and interesting past, mysteriously placed in command of a brand new starship, we are preparing to launch as our plotlines coalesce.

If you love the “Wrath of Khan” era of Trek, then come join us for one of the most exciting eras of exploration, adventure and excitement! We’ve senior and crew positions open for players who are looking for an interactive environment… some come slip on one of the coolest uniforms in Trek history, grab a phaser and let’s go see what’s out there!

Waters of Coralee

Once home to a thriving populace, Nigelis IV had a history of decadent lifestyles and careless abandon. It’s population had no idea that Nigelis IV was slowly and inexorably in revolt. The main land was no longer pure and pristine as it had once had been. The water had long ceased to be fit for use in its natural form, now needing to be filtered and re-filtered to be able to make it potable. The atmosphere had lost its teal-blue luster, instead taking on the heavy gray-green hue of the mountains, not a bad color unless you knew what color it should be. And the land. The land could not sustain flora and fauna, its soil having long since given way to mounds of man-made, man-manipulated refuse which in turn leaked such highly toxic fluids that the soil had no mineral or bacteriological base any longer.

So now, the planet was revolting – quaking, shaking, blowing and inundating as its weather patterns hurled out of control. What remained of the population were divided into two groups, the half that struggled and toiled to survive on the land, and the rich who lived far out to sea on man-made islands made of dredged sand and concrete supported by a system of hydraulic tethers larger than many of the buildings the islands supported. Those who lived on the islands felt no quakes, smelled only the clean salty sea air and enjoyed the sunshine and shopping as they went about their lives, oblivious as to the problems not only around them, but also beneath their feet.

This mission, ongoing since April has been one of discovery and challenges as we attempt to aid a people divided for more than a century. While some have held true to morals and peace, others have led lives of a much darker nature. While it may seem you know from the start who is who, we are beginning to realize a sad truth. Everyone has a darkside.

Primarily we are a Star Trek role playing game, but today we are just a group of people who have joined with Author Danielle Raver to attempt to raise money for school clothes for 2 boys. Danielle had decided that all proceeds from her books, including fantasy novel Brother Betrayed, from now until Sunday night will go towards this cause. This is the first time any person has offered their entire proceeds to help someone we have adopted, and the fleet is truly humbled by such a gesture of good will. Those interested in helping, can help in 2 ways. 1. BUY A BOOK! http://www.amazon.com/Danielle-Raver/e/B004X2RWNO/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_1 This includes 2 kindle books and 1 paperback, so a little something for everyone! The Admiral’s PADD

Pioneer

Back in February I issued a challenge to the Captains, and one Captain stood out in his response. We were discussing how to incorporate a musical into a game, and this is what he came up with.   Cool green hills of Earth. A special thanks to Captain Zartog of the USS Pioneer.

This month has been filled with the ins and outs of any Fleet. We continue to grow, and we spent the last 30 days experiencing a few expected growing pains. We try very hard to avoid allowing the stress of managing a large fleet, along with a family, show in any way. But the time comes when every good man falls short in some regard. This happened with me recently and I am slowly getting back into the swing of things. The fleet remains stable, continues to grow, and continues to spread the much needed training throughout our command. It seems that the fleet grew beyond my expectations overnight, and I was not prepared to carry on to the next larger level.

One of the greatest fears we have in the Admiralty is any person ‘burning out’ and while I have never felt tired of the game nor of the people, I think I was starting to feel a bit worn down in the recent weeks. I forgot to take breaks from the administration of the fleet and to allow myself to just sit back and write.  Writing in the game is more than just fun for me; it’s a creative release along with being a therapeutic way for me to simply let go of basic daily frustrations. I forgot that. I think we all do sometimes though, so I don’t feel too bad about it, except to say I robbed myself of valuable ME time.

Anyways, not a lot to report fleet wide. A new ship or two joins us, but we aren’t at the point of announcing names and links just yet. That will be in next month’s issue. I remind everyone to check us out on Facebook.com/IndependenceFleet or on Twitter @IndependenceFLT

Happy Simming
Admiral Wakeland

Patriot

USS Patriot

The USS Patriot docks at Station 54, a small trade facility hovering on the edge of chaos, in that small empty sector between Breen space and Federation territory. The station serves as a trade route outpost frequented often by the Ferengi. It is here the Patriot will rest and repair the ship while taking on some new recruits.

While docked, an unknown virus has taken hold of people on the station and may be spreading freely. There has also been an attempted assassination on the Commanders life.

Join us today to see what happens next, or to decide where we go for yourself.

USS Chirikov

With the captain away on a diplomatic errand, the USS Chirikov delivers supplies to Gamma Kybari III (B’Len) and finds that the post-Dominion War Klingon occupation of the Cardassian colony has become problematic. Allegations of abuse and corruption have been made and the crew is caught in the middle. Meanwhile, Trill operatives plot to steal the Strayer symbionts.

The USS Chirikov can use a few good people, whether it’s long-term or just for one mission. Write for a Starfleet officer, a civilian, or be a guest star. USS Bonaventure

USS Bonaventure

New Mission: Trade Routes – The Bonaventure is ordered to investigate the distress call of the SS Bombay, a cargo freighter that has been running equipment and personnel for the Federation to multiple outposts near the Orion border. Rumor has it that Nausican raiders have been hired on as additional muscle to push the Federation back from this frontier. What sort of trouble might the intrepid crew of the Bonaventure find as they investigate this issue?

USS Proxima

USS proxima

Welcome to the USS Proxima!

After an extensive 18 month refit, the USS Proxima is about to embark on the next phase of her journey. The new Refit-Constitution class ship is more advanced in every way than the standard Constitution class ships, but it is still a dangerous time for the Federation. The Klingons have rolled out their answer to this new starship with their K’Tinga class battle cruiser, and Romulans lurk behind asteroids shielded from our sensors by their cloaking devices. Proxima has been directed to take command as the lead ship in Crossroads Sector.
Operating primarily in the vicinity of the Federation, Klingon and Gorn borders, the Proxima now monitors the ever evolving situation in the Gorn Hegemony, as well as Imperial Klingon Empire. Ever ready to respond to trouble in either region, the Proxima now stands a constant vigil, in the hope that one day their presence will no longer be required.
The Proxima will always need men and women of honor, and integrity to maintain their vigil. Will you join this noble crew?

Alamo Station

Alamo Station

GAME DAY approaches! The station is abuzz with excitement over the Wadi (game obsessed race in the Gamma Quadrant) asking the Federation to host their biggest holiday which includes an interstellar star ship race. The prize, a peek at Wadi Chula technology more than one government would kill to see! The Dominion, Federation, Romulan and Cardassians have already entered ships and now it is up the the crew of Alamo Station to make sure the race does not turn into another war.

USS Nova

USS Nova

The USS Nova has gone into dry dock due to a lack of interest by its players. We hope to see the ship return this winter if possible.

Nibiru Station

nibiru station

Welcome to the Nibiru Station!  Nibiru Station is a Nor class space station in orbit of the once lush M-Class planet Nyrruh located in the Inferna Sector midway point between Beta Veldana (Betazed) and Sol (Earth), as well as the midway point between the Cardassian Empire (what’s left of it anyway) and the Klingon Empire. It’s mission is to aid in stabilizing the planet below after a series of natural disasters have shaken it’s society to it’s very core. This mission is aided by the trade route that goes through the sector bringing new life and new business.

However all is not well. With a near constant threat of more disasters the planet is uneasy and with the new traffic through the system crime is on the rise.
Nibiru Station is a forum based Roll Playing Simulation game set in the world of Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry.

Events aboard Nibiru Station take place in the year 2388, approximately 10 years after the events that took place in Star Trek: Nemesis and only a year after the massive supernova that destroyed the Romulan Star Empire.
Our focus is on the characters and how they fit in the story, from the day to day to the extreme moments when the heat is on.
We encourage people to take on the roles of multiple characters, but it is not required.

USS Sunfire

USS Sunfire D

Waters of Coralee – Once home to a thriving populace, Nigelis IV had a history of decadent lifestyles and careless abandon.

Those who lived on the islands felt no quakes, smelled only the clean salty sea air and enjoyed the sunshine and shopping as they went about their lives, oblivious as to the problems not only around them, but also beneath their feet

Challenger

USS Challenger

We’ve had two players on LOA and two with no internet for awhile, so four of members were inactive for quite some time. Therefore, there are currently no updates for the ship. However, everything is back up and running so expect an update in another week or two!

Indomitable

Chuck Norris

USS chuck norris

And our new mission, “Not Where I Belong,” has begun!

The Chuck Norris is assigned to investigate an anomaly on the planet Varek 3, where the culture is about to develop warp drive. As the Chuck Norris leaves Space Dock, however, the crew mysterious switches places with each other, unbeknownst to everyone except for the new Chief Engineer.

LibertyB

USS liberty B

The USS Liberty has been destroyed and the crew is stranded on a mostly water planet. The crew has started a mutiny against the fair captain and have put there XO in command locking up the captain as they survive and wait for rescue. Join the fun.
Malinche

USS Malinche

The Malinche Is Still On Its “Maiden Voyage” mission. Its very slow going at the moment. It maybe placed on hold and return to dock.

Rioja

USS rioja

The Captain has retaken command as of this date and things are running smoothly, the new mission has begun; A Cardassian ship made it’s way through federation defences and was destroyed mysteriously leaving nothing but a Cardassian survivor and a Bajoran artefact.

Liberty Belle

USS Liberty Belle

It is with great happiness that I bid welcome to yet another new player to the Liberty Belle, in a more unique – but nevertheless essential – position on board.

Playing a darker character with a grimmer past (which fits in rather well with many of our current characters!) will be Wai Kiat as the ship’s chief of the boat and master-at-arms, Master Chief Petty Officer Liu Ming, with a back story that ties perfectly into the timeline of Task Force Omega, chock-a-block with survivor’s guilt from the Borg Invasion and relevant experiences following that dark time in the Federation’s history.

Please give Wai Kiat a warm welcome, but Chief Ming will be joining the crew during the next mission, when the crew becomes embroiled in a new Dominion plot. In the meantime, Wai Kiat is happy to have Ming do some back posts, particularly with plots pertaining to the Andorian Schism and other cold war themes.

Regards,

Chris

USS Spartan

Welcome to the USS Spartan, a ship with a long history and an incredible tale…

Spartan’s journey began decades ago in a galaxy very much like the one he, and his crew, find themselves in now. It’s just not the same reality you see and therein lays the rub.

Spartan’s path began as an NX-class Nautilus spaceframe with an experimental AI in the late 2360′s. His journey and that of the crew spanned three different service groups, four fleets and forty years as he and his crew hopped from one spaceframe to another.

Spartan fought wars, saved worlds, deposed despotic rulers and ferried dignitaries to highly secret locations for discussions that were so far beyond normal clearance it might as well have been down a singularity. Spartan was central in expanding the membership of the Alliance (his reality’s version of the Khittomer Accords Allies), adding to the roster of worlds the Romulan Republic, the Rihan Convergence, the Cardassian Union, the Ferengi Alliance, the Q’lrn Unity, the Consensus, the Klingon Imperium, the Sinari and the Ico.

Spartan hosted some of the most decorated officers in all of Starfleet and the most dedicated and when a new threat, the Anazi attacked, Spartan led the way into the fight. In five years of brutal war the Anazi and their Syndicate allies nearly wiped out the Alliance. Spartan and his crew stood fast and fought back against a foe that blew away lesser crews as so much dust before a squall. In the end the Anazi mysteriously vanished, leaving their allies to fall before the combined might of Spartan and the Alliance. Though victorious, the Alliance suffered a heavy cost.

The aftermath of the Anazi War left the Alliance held together with wishes and the strings of friendship and mutual need. Each species and civilization brought forward the best skills of its people to help repair the damage wrought by the amazingly ruthless and devastating Anazi.

For nearly twenty more years, the crew of the Spartan worked tirelessly to rebuild their civilization while Spartan and other powerful Interdiction Cruisers sat inactive in mothball fleets, since there weren’t enough resources to maintain them. Spartan slept in the cold darkness of space, dreaming of the day he’d fly again.

When that day came, nothing went as planned.

A new crew arrived to launch the new “Outward Project,” a bold endeavor by the still battered Core Worlds to make contact with colonies and outposts lost behind the Anazi line during the war. The children of Spartan’s original crew and some of their youngest relatives came to shake Spartan awake and found… well, not exactly what they were expecting.

At some point, when Spartan was being shut down, the Unity and the Federation had pooled resources and implanted Spartan’s worn and damaged spaceframe with organic components such as their living ships, the Vitaki, were made from. Spartan was now cybernetic, partially organic and alive, partially inorganic and nonliving. And what they found in place of a normal Starfleet computer core was instead… a massive biocrystalline core, a living brain, of a Vitaki.

And this new hybrid ship was asleep and quite comfortably so.

Eventually Spartan’s new crew shook him awake and he met his new captain. They formed a rapport but before they could get underway the real troubles began, with sabotage as they prepared to depart, then a mine that had been hidden and was inaccessible where it was, and then the original NX-Spartan Nautilus class was used to attack them. They fled, the mine was handled in a desperate maneuver involving transporters as an Imperium ship got in the way of the NX and took it out by sacrificing itself.

Spartan, in his first jump in two-and-a-half decades, blew out a whole deck and several sections along one side as his matter buffers imploded, ripping open a hole into subspace through which they plummeted.

After many harrowing misadventures across a variety of sidereal realities, Spartan found a new “home”, one that he and his crew were closely modulated to and one that while several decades less advanced then they were, it was still remarkably similar to the universe they left behind.

Spartan and his crew now rest in the David Mack version of the Destiny novels and the Typhon Pact circa 2380. We begin in this timeline and follow significant events in the series closely while allowing for original content. Spartan is an advanced ship designed primarily for combat and intelligence. His technology, while organic and strange to this timeline is familiar enough that Starfleet from any era can pick up his systems quickly. Spartan is currently looking for crew who are willing to make a new home, a crew that sometimes does bad things to do the right thing and a crew that isn’t normal under any circumstances. If you feel up for a creative challenge set in an original and dynamic setting staged in the Star Trek universe, then apply today.

Special Thanks

This month I want to join together in thanking Dennis Archer for hosting the roast of our CNC, Admiral Wheeler. Not only did he take a commanding role in gathering ammunition to bring the Chief Admiral down a notch, but he also was more than capable when it came to dealing with the fallout of hurt feelings and scarred friendships.

Also thank you to Robert Aaron for once again staying on top of ships’ Captains to ensure that we have up to date and valid information in regards to each and every ship within our mighty fleet.

And this month we want to thank Yardseller for the opportunity to get the word out for our sim. They have offered a trade off, we run a few Star Trek related listings in the newsletter and they run our newsletter for their members to see. Nice trade off if you ask me.

From Happy Birthdays to selling stuff on Yardseller, this month’s newsletter was packed full of goodies. Every month we join together as friends and fellow writers to create stories that can stretch the imagination or provide a release from our regular lives. Whatever the reason you are part of the team, I call you brother, sister, friend and I am glad you are a part of the story.

Keep writing and keep promoting your ship. Fill them with new writers, new characters and guide them through the cycle that is the writing experience. Teach them to be better writers so that they can teach the next generation and may we hope that we never forget how to tell a good story.

Welcome to the
Independence Fleet Newsletter
for the month of May…

Opening…

May was a rough month for the crew of the USS Archimedes, the Captains of the fleet, and the Admirals who work with these Captains every day. Fleet Admiral Wheeler and I have kept Chris’ family, including Brandon, and his shipmates in our prayers as we all struggle to find our footing.

July 4th 2012 marks 11 years of service for Independence Fleet. Anyone who wishes to send large dollar amounts for absolutely no reason may contact Vice Admiral Wakeland.

Remember as always if you have news to recommend for the newsletter simply e-mail us at news@independencefleet.com

The Admiral’s PADD

From the desk of Vice Admiral Wakeland

As some of you may already be aware, Independence Fleet has suffered a great loss recently. Captain Noah Mitchell, whose real name is Chris, passed away. While trying to work out what I would write for this month’s Admiral’s PADD, my attention kept being drawn toward the different trees around me. I was vaguely annoyed with myself, because obviously that was not where my attention needed to be. It took me about five minutes to connect the dots, and when I did, I was able to liken these trees to our games. You see, all of our games start out small, and most of the games outlive us all, though usually due to retirement, sometimes not. It is never an easy task to say goodbye to a friend, but we take some comfort in the fact that the USS Archimedes is a strong, healthy game that will live on for many more years in honor of its fallen Captain. Any person who wishes to express their condolences may do so via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/IndependenceFleet for those of you without Facebook, you may email your comments to comchase@independencefleet.com (be sure to sign your email with your character Name, Rank, and Ship) and I will post your comments.

Per order of Fleet Admiral Wheeler, the USS Archimedes shall forever serve in honor of Captain Noah Mitchell. In addition Captain Mitchell is hereby awarded the Independence Fleet Distinguished Service Medal for his dedication to the fleet and his sim. The Captains of the fleet have all come together as well, and they extend their full resources to every player on the Archimedes. A special Memorial is being planned to Honor Captain Mitchell at the 11 year anniversary of the fleet, which will take place July 4th.

This brings me to our celebration on July 4th. A Special Announcement will go out towards the end of this month laying out our online events. At this time I know that this includes a special memorial, a Roast of Fleet Admiral AJ Wheeler (who will luckily not be available online during the celebrations, thus I am in charge) I have extended the full protection of my office to every person who chooses to poke fun at our Fleet Admiral. Should you wish to have your jokes included, or to participate in person, please email comchase@independencefleet.com Our Roast Master this year is Captain Devys Argent of the USS Chirikov.

A final note here from the Admiral’s Padd. Life is far shorter than you realize. 20 years or 80, it doesn’t matter. As members of Starfleet we should always hold ourselves to a higher standard. The SIMs are about far more than being a good writer or a great leader. It’s about being the man or woman of honor that we hold so dear. Our characters are our alter egos, but every time we sit down to SIM we should take the chance to remind ourselves of the many lessons we can learn from Star Trek. Respect every sentient life form, assist every sentient life form, and make the decisions that benefit the many. These standards allow us all to see past Gay/Straight, Liberal/Conservative, Friend or Enemy. To be a person of Honor is one of the greatest complements I can think of.

In Honor of Captain Noah Mitchell
Vice Admiral Landon Wakeland

Avalon

USS Avalon

The Most Dangerous of Games - The USS Avalon is dispatched to investigate a planet in the Baloran sector, which has been tasked for a covert investigation of the world’s progress. The Planet, Balon Prime, had been visited eighty years previously by the USS Coleman – who reported no significant signs of civilisation.
However, a recent survey mission has reported significant change to the civilisation level of Balon Prime, and the USS Avalon has been tasked with the job of discovering what.

Archimedes

USS Archimedes

The Compound Cascade is a vast area of unexplored space perfect for any Starfleet explorer.

Constellation

USS Constellation

After the last mission involving the diabolical Iago Don’John and the near destruction of the Constellation, Captain Robi formed two away teams… one to fly down to a nearby planetoid to recover dilithium deposits we need to power our ship (which is being repaired but is still not at 100%) and another away team to fly to a nearby trading post to gather supplies.
While this is happening, a helpful alien docks within the Constellation and provides Captain Robi with some insight into this sector of space. The alien also provides medical information and information in Astrometrics. He warns of a race called the Yuan, which are pirates and cohorts of the Shakespearean race who control most of this part of the galaxy.
Away Team One consists of Lieutenant Jericho Vin and Ensign Ssslaness, the new Gorn engineer. Lieutenant Schenn was originally assigned to this away team but was replaced by Ssslaness, so that Schenn could do a spacewalk to recover one of the extra shuttles. Jericho’s away team is in the shuttle Dantzig and has just landed on the surface, finding a old settlement in ruins.
Away Team Two consists of Commander Ocett, Lt.Commander T’Sera, Lieutenant Patterson and Doctor Sage. They arrived at the trading post and began to look around, but were shortly thereafter informed of a parking meter violation regarding the shuttle. Ocett and Sage return to the docking port to discover that their shuttle, Smoot, has been impounded by the Docking Authority, and that also a secondary safety inspection will occur lasting four or five hours due to a previous terrorist attack that made them increase security. Upon the Docking Authority’s search they discover Sage’s medical supplies and question him. Sage smarts off the the cop, who arrests him and tells Ocett he can bail him out at a later time.
On the bridge, Lieutenant Schenn is back from his spacewalk and has the watch, when he and Melvin Smiley discover a pack of Yuan pirate marauders on long range sensors proceeding very slowly in their direction, with an ETA of about 26 hours. Ena then returns to the bridge to take a transmission from someone she knows as Cole.

Constellation

USS pioneer

Raw Materials: A group of 75 colonists must be transported from Starbase 42 to their destination planet Grzywacz III, on the far Rimward edge of Federation space, several weeks out. They are opposed to replicator technology, and choose to maintain a fabrication culture. This includes objects as well as food supplies. They have extensive physical equipment and supplies for this fabrication technology, which includes some pretty sophisticated equipment.

They are fairly defensive about their philosophies, and not afraid to confront skeptics.

The colonists are a specialized group of technicians, and they and their supplies will be supplementing a colony already in existence. Join us on our adventures today!

Constellation

USS washington

The Forge: The crew of the Washington travels to Vulcan for a conference, but trouble is abound when a group of rebels is found to have infiltrated the conference in hopes of assassinating several key ambassadors. Can the crew of the Washington discover the plot and foil the rebels in time?

Avalon

Starbase prime and uss sanctuary

The crew is going through their everyday duties when an experimental ship of the Interceptor class is stolen from Starbase’s Yards by a group of Maquis. To facilitate their escape the group has blown up one of the ships as a diversion, resulting in a large amount of casualties, so Starfleet and Starbase Primes’s commanding officer Captain Hathaway is determined to apprehend the ones responsible.

The Maquis however escape without much of a fight and have set course for the Klingon border. From there the actual chase begins as the USS Sanctuary under the command of Captain Archer sets out in a hurry to intercept the stolen ship into the deep unexplored regions of the Typhon Expanse. However what they didn’t expect was that their journey would take them across the galaxy into the edges of the Delta Quadrant.

Avalon

STARTREK: AVALON

Star Trek: Avalon is coming along quite nicely. I almost have a full crew compliment. All I need now is an FCO, SOO and a Counselor. We are just about to get underway with our shakdown and after that we will be on our way out of the Sol System.

Will the Avalon be blown up before she starts her first mission? Join to find out.

Patriot

USS Patriot

The USS Patriot A docks at Station 54, a small trade facility hovering on the edge of chaos, in that small empty sector between Breen space and Federation territory. The station serves as a trade route outpost frequented often by the Ferengi. It is here the Patriot will rest and repair the ship while taking on some new recruits. During this time of character development we have already experienced an assassination attempt and a viral outbreak of some sort.

Well done ladies and gentlemen of the Patriot. We are off to nice trot this month and things are about to become interesting. While there are two character development story lines unfolding, at the end of June one will victoriously send us into our next mission. It would be wise to get your CD stories in soon. I would like to thank Admiral Wakeland for providing his pussy and something to talk about when nothing else was available. We are always looking for more writiers willing to make the story more interesting. If you want to be a part of the story then visit us and join up today.

Chirikov

USS Chirikov

Current Mission: “Of Builders, Beggars and Brigands” – The USS Chirikov, assigned Cardassian liaison Dr. Cila Rennoc, delivers supplies to Gamma Kybari III (B’Len) and finds that the Klingon occupation of the Cardassian colony has become problematic. Allegations of abuse and corruption have been made and the crew is caught in the middle. Meanwhile, Trill operatives plot to steal the Strayer symbionts.

The USS Chirikov is a gold-level role play SIM based in the Star Trek universe and set in year 2388 (a year after the events described by Ambassador Spock in his mind-meld recap occur). We follow the Destiny trilogy and Typhon Pact series timeline.

I am Captain Devys Argent, Commanding Officer. The Chirikov is accepting new crew members. Take a look around the website and if you like what you see, why not join us? We would love to welcome you aboard! Apply now!

uss bonaventure

A not so simple Cruise - The Bonaventure, under command of a new CO and with a new crew, leaves starbase and starts its mission, getting off to an easy start with a supply drop and status check on a Federation colony. But nothing is as it seems, and something lurks in the shadows.

Alamo Station

We on Starbase 820 are participants in a roleplaying sim (simulation) played on-line. The setting is based on the Star Trek Universe years after the end of the Dominion War, the events of Star Trek Nemesis, Gamma Quadrant 4 part book series and the disappearance of Ambassador Spock. Our sim takes place in a unique setting aboard a space station in the Gamma Quadrant a few systems away from the Bajoran Wormhole and DS9. The outpost itself was used as a Dominion Refueling Depot acting as a staging area for the invasion force entering the Alpha Quadrant during the Dominion War but has been converted into a mecca of commerce following their surrender. The station was gifted to the Federation by the Founders as a gesture of good will and in an attempt, no doubt, to focus the inevitable influx of exploration and colonization away from Dominion interests. Thus was born Starbase 820…affectionately called “Alamo Station” by its new crew. Let’s hope we can make a better fate for ourselves than the defenders of its namesake did.

What Are We Going To Do Without a Viewscreen?: Episode 9

Nobody said life on a space station in the Gamma Quadrant was going to be easy but when the Vorta representative of the Dominion shows up with his Jem’Hedar bodyguards to officially welcome the Federation, things take an interesting turn.
USS Nova

USS Nova

USS Nova

nibiru station

USS Sunfire

USS Sunfire

Waters of Coralee - Once home to a thriving populace, Nigelis IV had a history of decadent lifestyles and careless abandon.

Challenger

USS Challenger

Vulvan Virus - While constructing an array on an uninhabited planet near the neutral zone, the Challenger crew accidentally beams aboard a viral agent specific to Vulcan DNA only. 10% of the crew soon become incapacitated, including the conn officer, the second officer, and the captain. Will the EMH find a vaccine for this interesting disease, or are all Vulcans on the Challenger destined to die?

IKS Koloth

I.K.S. Koloth

After a 2-year incarceration following a dispute with the Gorn, Captain Rheon has been reinstated to the IKS Koloth to investigate threats from the Typhon Pact. However, the Klingon Empire is becoming increasingly paranoid of the Khitomer Accords and their allegiance to the Federation.

Dozens of minor events begin to pile up until the High Council eventually has to make a decision: do they stay, or do they go? And who is behind all of these unsettling events? The IKS Koloth is designated to investigate the sudden turn within the Klingon Empire and to discover what or who is responsible.

Meanwhile, amidst his own crew, trouble arises when Rheon makes decisions that are unfavorable with some of the rest of the crew to continue aligning with the Federation despite increasing belief that the Typhon Pact is superior. Will they come to see what is really happening? Is the Typhon Pact responsible for the mysterious incidents that are swaying the Klingon Empire to side with them? …Eridani

USS Spartan

Sedition: As Spartan arrives at the remote and normally inaccessible world of qi’tOk, home of House qIls, they find themselves dealing with Klingon Force in occupation of the outer system attempting to circumvent the natural defensive qualities of the system and the artificial ones the qIls have trapped their system with.

Facing a system full of extreme gravitational shear, broken planetary debris and whirling storms of matter in seemingly random patterns in orbit of a neutron star, the Klingon Fleet appears not to be the full strength of the Klingon Empire but rather a few Houses attempting to lay siege. Their target, a lone planet in the golden zone of the system, just close enough o be habitable but too far to be comfortable. The world of qi’tOk is an icy Hell to Klingons, a planet that Efrosians and Andorians would find starkly beautiful and of course, House caIls.

Having purchased this remote and inaccessible system from the Empire for a steal over a century ago, the qIls had been terraforming it and building for nearly 150 years. And in that time, they had begun to sell technological developments to the Empire that they came up with while keeping the best for themselves. The net? Faster, better ships that could outrun, outmaneuver and out-fight similar vessels of the same class in the KDF and arguably, Starfleet.

There were, of course, rumors that they were engaged in a breeding program of some sort as well. But if you didn’t do business with them, they pretty much ignored you.

Spartan is here to make contact with the House to determine if this version of House qIls is like the one from their timeline, if a few decades younger.

Special Thanks

With the passing of Captain Mitchell this month we have pushed back the interview we had planned in order to give special thanks to you, each and every one of you who are a part of Independence Fleet and more importantly, to those that support our members. Those people who are behind the scenes, a husband, a wife, a boyfriend, a crazy uncle, that kid down the street who throws pebbles at your house because you never come out and the outside has fallen into haunted disarray. They all encourage us to want to write, to devote a part of our lives to bringing words to others and enriching their lives with a small untouchable intangible part of ourselves.
So thank you from the bottoms of our hearts and know that one day your words will be felt by the masses and one day, just maybe, that kid will get what’s coming to him. Rock, what rock?

Closing

Independence Fleet is no ordinary place to have fellowship or post stories you think no one will ever care about. IDF is more like the ultimate choose your own adventure story where not only do you get to decide what words to use, but you get to decide who lives and who dies and what really lies down that road less traveled by.

This month has seen many new writers join us, as well as many who have left us by one means or another. I find if deeply sad to lose anyone from any ship, many of whom I have never met and am sorry to say have never read their stories. Maybe that is the part that irritates me the most, not having had the chance to peer into someone elses mind through the portal that is their words.

I encourage each of you to keep writing. Keep building that story, you never know who might be reading on the other end and who would ever miss you if you stopped.
